Ok so I have been challenged by Scribbs to share my creative process and get something published. I was once published in a child’s anthology of poems but I don’t think that really counts. First I have to write something. I have recently begun reworking an old story of mine. I’m not sure how much of the original plot to leave in and how much too completely demolish.
So project novel is now underway. However I have a lot of poetry ready to go so we shall see if I can get SOMETHING published.
I have written a lot more recently what with ‘prep pieces’ (the little things I write to get me in the mood to write –yes I’m that odd) and my IC narratives for LARP. This means I am already re-tuning and honing my skills.
So as a first step I’d like to share a good ‘prep piece’ of mine. It’s the only short I have written that is both good and safe for general viewing!
Highland man:
He stood alone on the hill as the wind quietly blew his hair about his face. The fields stretched out forever beyond only stopping as the woods covered them or as they dipped into valleys and hid behind hills. The sun was climbing in the sky and he felt the furs upon the flesh of his back warm slightly. His chest was bare apart from his cloak and the swirls etched on in some form of woad. It was only a short walk back to his village now. He hoisted the deer over his shoulder once more; the hunt went well today, his spear had struck true into the animal, its life ending in a single blow. The man had stopped a while to drink from a skin that hung about his shoulder and nested under his armpit, bound there by some leather rope. The cows in the fields below were mainly silent and on their feet, this meant fair weather and brightened the man further. He walked a little way further with the wind rustling the pleats of his kilt, he felt for his Sgian Dubh as it comforted him, the silent and deadly black dagger hidden within his tartan. He would be home by midday, he thought about the pride on his woman’s face as he’d present the mighty beast for her to prepare for food. Its hide would make some fine garments for her or his son perhaps, he smiled, she would be happy indeed.
Copyright of me!
So that’s just a little something I wrote to get me in the mood for writing. Sometimes I go with a stream of conscious and sometimes a short story like that. I have also found music with no words helps me write.
Now to get something published!
